"Noncompliant: Discwoman 37 (January 18, 2018)
Born Lisa Smith, Noncompliant spent many years playing and recording as DJ Shiva; this newer moniker is less a signal of rebirth than of consolidation. (And, of course, protest, as a perusal of her Twitter account makes plain.) But though she’s always played hard and deep, the sets she’s issued since the switch have been especially focused and invigorated. This one — recorded live at a femme-centric party thrown in Pittsburgh last July 29 by promoters GirlFx at the club Hot Mass, which resides beneath a bathhouse and whose capacity is under 200 — lets Smith show off her, and techno’s, full range. Right, a live set tends to lose something in the transition to earbuds, especially considering the original setting; and right, even I get sick of nonstop techno over four hours. But this set transmits the humidity of the original room. I keep waiting for things to flag, and for 221 minutes, nothing does. Instead, rooms open up to more rooms. And as a colleague put it, “Just when I’m about to give up, ‘Energy Flash.’ ”

It’s no secret that Noncompliant aka DJ Shiva has a strong voice and isn’t afraid to use it, but she’s got the DJ and producer chops to back it up. And she’s much more than a “Twitter personality” — she’s proof that these channels can be strong networks for marginalized people, and that social media can be used to shape discourse and fight heteropatriarchal power within music scenes and within this fucked up world.
Noncompliant chosen as one of Mixmag's Breakthrough DJs of 2017
The artist FKA DJ Shiva has been honing her craft for decades, playing regularly around the US Midwest. As her moniker implies, she takes no prisoners, channelling the fury instilled by worldly injustices into blistering, defiant sets. In 2017 she toured Europe and picked up bookings at top-tier clubs across the States.

"Hailing from Indianapolis, Indiana, she's been an underground hero since the '90s, unleashing her style at raves in barns and bingo halls and on mixes like 1999's Scenes From Dystopia. Now she's enjoying a much overdo breakthrough, with a debut a Panorama Bar earlier this year and her first European tour on the horizon. With RA.591, we get a sense of what we've been missing."

Lisa catches our ear with perceptive observations on the gender schism within electronic music. She is unapologetic in her strong opinions and incredibly articulate, which makes her magnetic, both on camera and off.
But Lisa has more than politics to offer. As it turns out, she is one of the best DJ/producers we’ve never heard of.

There’s people who are passionate about Techno and there’s people like Lisa Smith, who seem to practically breathe Techno. Smith has been part of the Midwest rave scene for two decades now and has become internationally known under her DJ Shiva moniker in the past years, but has also recently debuted with a new pseudonym, the hardware-orientated Noncompliant Her recent releases under the new name on Detroit Underground and Ambivalent’s Valence imprint showcase a brand of beltering, hyperprecise Techno with a funky twist that also dominates her contribution to our Groove podcast. It’s all peaks and valleys – but Techno through and through.
